Bernadete Fernandes

Bernadete Fernandes is 24 years old and lives in a rural village near Dili City with her husband and 5 children. All of her children are between the ages of 4 months and 6 years old, and none of them are attending school.

Her husband Jose is a gardener who sells fire wood 2-3 times a week, taking it by cart to Dili city which is about 5km from their village. Her husband’s business is quite successful, generating a profit of about US$20-$30 each time he goes to Dili. In order to help her husband financially, Bernadete has asked for a microfinance loan, which would allow her to buy more firewood to sell.

Bernadete hopes that this expansion in her husband’s business will allow her to better her family’s living condition and to send her children to school next year to obtain a good education.
