Filomena da Cruz Ornai

Now aged 40, Filomena da Cruz Hornai has been a widow for some years. She lives with her parents and 3 children aged between 8 and 17 in a one room, thatched grass roof house in Tibar, a village about 15kms from Dili. The children all attend school: the oldest at senior high, the two younger ones at junior high school.

Filomena runs a kiosk business in her village selling groceries, snacks, drinks, and sweets. The prvides income of $3-5 a day, from which she must pay the normal costs of the household as well as her children’s education.

Being a widow makes it especially difficult for Filomena to make ends meet. She hopes that by taking out a loan, and increasing the stock in her shop, she can generate more sales, and that the increased income will help cover the family’s daily outgoings and education costs, and eventually let her improve the family’s living conditions.
