Felizarda Alves runs a small business selling cabbages, beans, mustard and local palm wine from her rural village to the Aileu market and sometimes to Dili market. She lives in the Lebkuku district of Aileu in Timor Leste with her husband and seven children.
Felizarda has applied for this loan in order to generate more income from her business and keep her seven children in school. Her eldest is now attending university in Dili and Felizarda would like to fulfil her dream of seeing her eldest graduate from university.

The loan of $200 that Felizarda Alves received has enabled her to increase the amount of stock she can purchase for her business, which sells palm wine. This has increased her income to around $18-25 each day. The profits of up to $10 a day have allowed her to put some money in the bank, as well as support her daughter who is currently studying at the UNPAZ University in Timor-Leste and her two younger children in Senior high school.
She is trying to manage her income between expanding her business and paying her children’s school fees. She wants to maintain her reliability with her customers as a palm wine salesperson, but also to encourage her children to desire further education.
Now that she has completed repaying this loan, she plans to take out another loan. This will allow her to continue the expansion of her business and also begin improving her family’s living condition.
